THEY WANT TO GET RID OF THE STREET VENDORS (N* 3)




They Want To Get Rid of The Street Vendors is part of Tetine's ongoing series of informal DIY guerilla street/video actions on the semantics of self-piracy, sound object (dis)functionality, reconfiguration of goods & auto sampling tactics.

An improvised ‘camelo’ (informal street selling point) with banners, selected items and manufactured CDs was set up at the glorious White Cubicle toilette to emanate a sexually charged anti-industry "wall of sound”. Pop and anti-pop eating themselves. The death of the record. The record of the time.Visitors are encouraged to unglue our Cds from the wall and take them home!

Bruno Verner & Eliete Mejorado – Dec 2012

Tetine are artists/musicians Bruno Verner and Eliete Mejorado. The pair met in 1995 in Brazil while taking part in the local underground art punk scene of São Paulo.

Since then they have created a multitude of works from baile funk performances to electronica, spoken word & atonal orchestral music incursions for plays, from experimental radio shows to 
ritualistic street actions, artist films, installations and independent curatorial projects.

A wild mix-up of Punk-Funk/NewWave/Post-Punk/Baile-Bass, Tetine’s music is frequently described as an unconventional mixture of raw punky energy and attitude with musical influences that range from artists such as Throbbing Gristle, Tuxedomoon to Kraftwerk & Can, but also incorporating heavily the more experimental side of Brazilian pop experimentalists such as Rogerio Sganzerla, 
Helena Ignes, Os Mutantes, Novos Baianos and the Rio Baile Funk scene.

Bruno Verner and Eliete Mejorado have carved an unusual artistic path constantly exploring the boundaries between music, art, video and performance. They have made a series of ritualistic performances and have extensively exhibited art films and video throughout Europe and South America. The duo’s live events range from rock gigs to gallery installations; from opening ‘Tropicalia – A Revolution in Brazilian Culture’ exhibition at the Barbican Centre in London to numerous art performances for galleries, museums, art spaces, cinemas and festivals around the world. Actions were shown from Paris (Palais de Tokyo), to Chicago (The Wire’s Adventures in Modern Music Festival) and Sonar including live performances at Museu Serralves in Porto, A FoundationLiverpool BiennalHebbel Am Ufer in Berlin, Whitechapel GalleryFrankfurter Kunstverein, National Museum of Contemporary Art of Norway, Sternessen Museum amongst many others.

Tetine have also been instrumental in bringing the Brazilian underground music scene to the attention of the UK for a number of years. They compiled, presented and mixed the first ever album of Baile Funk outside of Brazil (Slum Dunk Presents Funk Carioca Mixed by Tetine, 2004 released on Mr Bongo Records) as well as an essential primer to early-80s Post-Punk from Sao Paulo, the acclaimed album The Sexual Life of The Savages, released on Soul Jazz Records in 2006).

Both these albums have influenced an entire new generation of DJs, beat-makers and music writers around the world.

On another note Bruno Verner and Eliete Mejorado have run Slum Dunk radio show on Resonance Fm 104.4 - pretty much since the station's inception in 2003. On Slum Dunk they broadcast a multitude of obscure and unexpected music from Brazil and beyond – including live interviews with hundreds of special guests, live and improvised sets of other artists and experimental broadcasting..

MICROCLIMA ZURICH TROPICAL -

Human Valley is a space at Kunsthalle Zurich for the presentation of borderline topics created by Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster and Tristan Bera especially for the rooms on the ground floor of Museum Bärengasse. After the chapters «Balzac Nouvelle Vague» by Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster and Tristan Bera, «l’amour en e majeur» a proposition by Heike-Karin Föll, Jean-Michel Wicker and Gregorio Magnani and «The Money Plot» by Egija Inzule, Tobias Kaspar and Hannes Loichinger, Human Valley opens its fourth chapter with a presentation by Pablo León de la Barra.

Freely inspired by Honoré de Balzac’s imaginary journey from Paris to Java (Voyage de Paris à Java, 1832), «Microclima Zurich Tropical» presents real and imagined journeys into the tropics and other jungles. Microclima proposes an immersion into a different Microclimate, and with it shifting points of references and giving visibility to narratives produced in other climates and geographies.

MICROCLIMA ZURICH TROPICAL is salon with works by Ana Roldán, Alejandro Cesarco, Gilda Mantilla and Raimond Chaves, Julia Rometti and Victor Costales, Radames ‘Juni’ Figueroa, Tetine, and others. MICROCLIMA ZURICH TROPICAL also includes a library and a cine club.

BIBLIOTECA AMAZONICA is an attempt to build a library with publications and posters by Irene Kopelman, Mariana Castillo Deball, Martha Hellion, Sophie Nys, Priscila Gonzaga, Leonor Antunes, Cassia Tabatini, Cecilia Palmeiro, Fabio Morais, Alexander Apostol, Jean Michel Wicker, Inti Guerrero, Miguel Calderon, Andre Romao, Ricardo Domeneck, Ediciones del Exotismo Ordinario Internacional, Alias Editorial, and others…

BIBLIOTECA AMAZONICA is inspired by Mantilla and Chaves’ research into the amazonic libraries of Iquitos in Peru (“In the jungle there is a city, in this city there is a library, and in that library is the jungle”) and in Dominique Gonzalez –Foerster’s investigation on the future of books (“is it possible to expand this library, and if so, how can it be done in a completely different way?”) and the relationship between text, space and climate as explored in her exhibition Chronotopes and Dioramas, at Dia Art Foundation/Hispanic Society of America in 2010.

CINE CLUB DE LOS TROPICOS is a changing programme of artists’ films which although have no direct relationship to Balzac, explore realistic narratives, present panoramic portraits of different aspects of society, and share the Balzacian ambition of creating fictions (and realities) as big as life. Artist films in the programme include amongst others: Gilda Mantilla and Raimond Chaves, An Uncomfortable Eagerness, 2011, about their research done in the Amazonian Libraries of Iquitos; Javier Bosques, The Splinter from the Tree, 2007, a personal portrait of the artist’s family life and history; Silvan Kälin, Lagoa do Ouro, 2008, a telenovela (soapopera) presenting a micro cosmos of the real life dramas of a small village of Pernambuco, Brazil…

In the course of the exhibition the presentation will grow over the space – works and books will be added, the film program extended. MICROCLIMA ZURICH TROPICAL also celebrates Balzac’s attempt to create his own microclimate, a failed attempt to transform the land around his house in Paris into a pineapple farm.

The stationary used by Marcel Broodthaers for his fictional Musée d’art Moderne in 1969, was replicated by Alejandro Cesarco in 2008 and used to print the press release.

Pablo León de la Barra thanks architect Douglas Stewart for collaborating on thinking the idea of the Microclimate, developed one night at a night club in London’s East End, where they identified (and later decided to join) a group of men dancing without shirt and creating their own microclimate in London’s cold winter weather.
