PRESS RELEASE : THE MUSIC ROOM

Iván Navarro with Hueso Records is pleased to present The Music Room, at the NY Art Book Fair presented by Printed Matter, at MoMA PS1, opening Thursday September 25th from 6 to 9 pm. Room #S201.
The Music Room is a self-contained project room within the fair, where visitors are invited to listen to musical recordings pressed onto vinyl, at a single central playing station, controlled by one record handler. Inspired by the 1958 Bengali film by the same title (Satyajit Ray’s The Music Room), the installation seeks to create a sensorially rich environment conducive to the experience of listening. Records, selected from Hueso Records’ collection, are played one at a time and the sound is transmitted into the atmosphere through a pair of hand-built speakers. The interior, designed by artist Courtney Smith, is a wall-to-wall padded spongy lounge, with reconfigurable foam alleys, terraces and alcoves where listeners can curl up and contemplate. The Music Room wall space will contain a wrap-around display of the records and various types of publications that Hueso Records is presenting - a combination of HR productions, guest participations, and its private collection of music made by artists.
The Music Room is a multi-disciplinary, collaborative project that celebrates the creation of music both formal and informal, and in such is particularly interested in music made by artists who are not necessarily musicians. It will feature a collection of historic recordings by visual and performance artists, as well as recordings of live performances and experiments that are otherwise forgotten, among them are recordings by Lawrence Weiner, La Monte Young, Martin Kippenberger, Rita Ackermann / Dave Nuss, Christian Marclay and many more. Other categories presented in The Music Room are visual and conceptual artists who use music as their primary medium, or collaborations between visual and musical artists, or performance artists whose work involves music. Among the many artists, musicians and artist non-musicians whose work is presented in The Music Room are New York-based Cecilia Vicuña, Rio-based Jarbas Lopes, London-based group Tetine, Chile-based Mario Navarro, and New York-based collective Angel Nevarez & Valerie Tevere. Finally, Hueso Records’ own publications will also be presented, among them vinyl releases of music by Alvaro Peña, Atom™, Tunde Adebimpe, and Leonino aka Jorge Gonzalez.

The Music Room project will also include several live art and musical performances:
Thursday 9/25: Opening Night – Chilean designer Pablo Castro will be selecting and playing records in The Music Room, and sharing the visual production of his collective La Nueva Gráfica Chilena. Pablo Castro is part of Minimal Technology, an Hueso Records vinyl release, and he has been the head graphic designer of Hueso Records productions since 2010.
Saturday 9/27 - Artist/performer Cecila Vicuña will release and perform Kuntur Ko, a LP made in 2012, for the first time. In this album, the artist improvises songs and poems for the spirit of water. The compositions address the sacred cycle of water, from glacier to ocean and back, as embodied in the flight of the condor. The record is released in limited edition, by Vicuña's own label, Tornsound in collaboration with Hueso Records. 4PM
Saturday 9/27 - Songwriter Nutria NN, first artist signed by Hueso Records, will perform a set of classic songs (Pop influenced by Chilean Folk) released by the label. 7PM

Tetine's Slum Dunk Presents Funk Carioca - 10 years!

It's been 10 years since Tetine's Slum Dunk Presents Funk Carioca was first released in 2004 on Mr Bongo! The album was pretty much the first Funk Carioca comp to have reached these shores & influenced an entire generation of DJs, producers & beat makers around the world.

We feel extremely proud of it. This is part of a love story that began through the waves of Resonance 104.4fm in Central London in 2002 where we run a radio show named Slum Dunk. There in a small studio in Denmark Str above an Indian Restaurant the first funks were played exhaustively every week for about 3 years to a curious and questioning audience.... not to mention the countless live interviews with artists, Djs, producers, journalists & people linked to the scene in Rio... & of course a great deal of talk on the music itself & its party politics.

The beats are still unbeatable.
The rest is History!

EU SOU FEIA MAS TO NA MODA / I'M UGLY BUT TRENDY (2005)

If you haven't watched this do check it out.

EU SOU FEIA MAS TO NA MODA is a film by Denise Garcia feat. Tati Quebra Barraco, Deise Tigrona, Vanessinha do Picachu, Valeska Popozuda, Cidinho e Doca, DJ Marlboro, Bonda faz Gostoso, Mr Catra, Ramona & many more including yours truly.

It was made with practically nothing... a super funk carioca/baile funk doc with a post-feminist look on the usually male-dominated 'bass debate' featuring frank conversations with the artists involved & superb music. It also tells you the story of the beginnings of the 'funk sensual' scene of the early 2000's in Rio with brilliant insights on what would come next.

We had the honor to produce the UK parts & premiered it at The Brady Arts Centre in East London to a full house back in 2005 as part of the Slum Dunk Film Program and later on with a special screening plus Q & A with Denise at the Whitechapel Gallery for our Tropical Punk show.

The rest is history! (or silence? or post-production...)
