Welcome To Las Vegas - taken from Tetine Vs Sophie Calle

From a listener ___ "I bought this when the late lamented Tower Records in London had an electronica section and I was looking for a new genre to get into. I recognised Sophie Calle's name and trusted that whatever this was, it would be worth the effort. Tetine are a Sao Paulo electronica duo, Eliete Mejorado (keyboards + sample + vocals + piano) and Bruno Verner(programming + keyboards + vocals + guitar + bass + piano), formed in 1995. The collaboration is a unique hip-hop-y, chillout-y classic piece of electronica they still perform live. The first half is a fragmented narrative about a disorganised road trip taken by a French woman and American man who first met in a bar: they visit a crank inventor, who turns out to be just like the man's father; they get a quickie marriage in Las Vegas - the official's tone and questions are splendidly bureaucratic; the car breaks down and takes an age to get fixed. And yet the couple are going through motions and maybe don't even love each other. The voices never interact, each is an isolated narrative. The second half is a collection of spacey and luxurious instrumentals, music for that nostalgic, sad, memorial mood which the random recall of a past love affair can bring on".

IF ( ARE YOU STILL WITH ME ?)

We're happy to announce Tetine's new video for If (Are You Still With Me?).
Music originally taken from the album 53 Diamonds - A Collection of Blind Stories, Crimes, Falsos-Brilhantes & Other Poems, released on Wet Dance 2016.

If ( Bruno Verner / Eliete Mejorado)

Are you still with me?
If….she was never able to go shopping, exercise, or cross the streets alone
And if she suddenly doesn't need your company
It may mean that someone else is filling your shoes.
It's possible… that she just needs time to herself but…
If she is unusually independent when she used to be overly needy
It may be a sign that she's just no longer as needy of you.
BEFORE…
She used to get angry if you didn't want to meet her for lunch
Or come out with her and her friends
But now everything you do is all right by her
Once upon a time, your every move had to be premeditated
But now all the small things you used to mess up are not enraging her anymore
This could be a good thing.
You wonder…. why she no longer cares?

Are you still with me?
She's no longer sharing her daily events with you
And… in order to find out what she's doing you need to break open her diary
Of course, you could always ask
But… when you do ask her questions, she turns the tables on you

Why you don’t present her with a new piece?

DREAM LIKE A BABY

DREAM LIKE A BABY - a video by TETINE (Bruno Verner & Eliete Mejorado), 2015

DREAM LIKE A BABY is a philosophical-experimental-ecological sci-fi  DIY video on the survivors of a dystopian fourth world dominated by bugs and other pests. A recurring theme in Tetine’s work, the film is set in a near-future amid a post-global new order which is assimilated as a continuos perpetual present. In the fourth world, Bruno & Eliete celebrate their personas in the form of ‘errant insects' & create a post-Derridean spoken word on cockroaches, future ecologies and other existential and political contaminations.

DREAM LIKE A BABY is part of a larger project that Tetine are currently developing: The Fourth Word Is Now / An Animal With The Demand to Make Choices.

Text and music: Bruno Verner / Eliete Mejorado
Production and direction: Tetine, 2015
Track originally released on the album "In Loveland With You" (Slum Dunk Music 2013).

File under: tetine, sci-fi, DIY-film, dance, dystopia, utopia, insects, food, future ecologies, music, electronica, dark electro-rap, subcultures, cockroaches, bees, bugs.

DREAM LIKE A BABY (B Verner & E. Mejorado - 2012)

Dream like a baby
You don’t seem to notice but
I’m right behind you
And I can hear your voice
This is a city of opportunities
By all means it’s an occasion
It calls for champagne

Out of this she had her last drink
We should preserve it for posterity
It’s a music piece now
So reverse
You’ve got 7 lives
You came for free trade
I’m for free love

Only you busy shopper
An animal with the demand to make choices
You’re here for commerce
The fourth world is now
The fourth world is here
So lets make the most of it
Did your dad never give you discipline?
Your car, your house, your job, your children, your life

Soon you’ll be killed by the guys in grey suits
They will shoot you down for this
And the shooter says:
It’s military, compulsory, disciplinary
And if you’re not here I’ll hunt you
And then I’ll shoot your son down like a duck

Dreaming like a baby we go
Dreaming of a thousand lovers
My hands are shaking
We are about to land
We are coming to a land near you
Haven’t I seen you before?
It’s hard to concentrate
So turn the lights out
Cos I have the tapes for your consideration
For your consideration

And once discipline begins to sink to the depths of the social
Then the social plague begins
I take my shoes off
Let irradiation takes over
The 4th world is left with whatever is left over
So what? who cares?
Your car, your boobs, your nose, your children
Everything is visible
Nothing is disguised
We’re about to land
Only 5 minutes and we’ll touch the ground
The fourth world is left with whatever is left over
The fourth world is now
An animal with the demand to make choices
Nothing is changed
You’re here for commerce
I’m here for free love
You followed me, now I’m following you
I’m right behind you
Your car, your house, your job, your children, your boobs, your life
You bought it
And the shooter says:
Those who are wearing shoes won’t remain
Take your clothes off

We are taking a boat to the end

ELETROBRECHT (1997)

Eletrobrecht  - 1997 (perfromance)

Eletrobrecth is an original spoken electronic cabaret piece by Tetine for piano, electronics & projections in 7 acts. It tells the saga of Chen-Te - a good chinese prostitute involved with three American GODs in the city of Setzuan.

Bruno Verner: piano, keys, voices & text
Eliete Mejorado - voices, piano
Costumes - Jun Nakao.

Tetine toured around 20 cities in the summer of 1997/1998 with Eletrobrecht which was commissioned by SESC Sao Paulo for the celebrations of Bertolt Brecht centenial in Brazil.

Watch below a rare documentation : "Arroz & Galinha" (act 4) - performed live in Sao Paulo, Brazil 1997.

G.O.D  - ACT 1

Hi. Um, Dois, Três.....................................................Pausa
Un deux, trois. Take your seats. Boa Noite.
Tonight we’re going to talk about GODS, AIR-HOSTESSES, PROSTITUTAS CHINESAS.
YUKA.
YOKO.
SUE and
CHEN-TE

JOHN
NIXON
GEORGE

Eram americanos.

Traziam no olhar e no sorriso a velha confiança ocidental.
O velho mito americano.
Eram do novo mundo.
Eram tratados com diferença.
Eram loiros.

Estavam procurando hotel.
Estavam procurando gente.

No guichê a primeira pergunta:

__ Excuse me Sir. I’m looking for a quiet place,
not very expensive,
not very luxurious,
near downtown,
and please
near some typical restaurant!

I’m sorry Sir. but SETSUAN is completely crowded. Full of tourists from all over the world because of the Olympic Asian games. Our city has never been so visited like this year. Acho praticamente impossível alojá-los ainda hoje.

Então um dos rapazes disse:
__ Is there any other tourist information in SETZUAN?

e assertativamente o chinês respondeu:

I’m afraid not.

__This city has no room for Americans.

And the young American prince said:
__ Thank you.

MOTHER NATURE & BLACK SEMIOTICS - a double release by Tetine out on Wet Dance Recordings

MOTHER NATURE & BLACK SEMIOTICS - a double release by Tetine out on Wet Dance Recordings

The sounds of MOTHER NATURE and BLACK SEMIOTICS were written between 2000 and 2005 with a deep sense of collective utopia in mind. They were recorded in a small room in a flatshare in Hackney and in a studio in Bethnal Green used as an office and rehearsal space.

Most of these tracks were part of 3 different art projects Tetine were involved at the time. The first one was Turkish Bath – our 16 hour long film-instalation on masculinity and its social, sexual and human unfoldings - comprised of 16 men of distinct backgrounds, nationalities and age groups and recorded in realtime in their private showers, bathtubs & toilet. The project was exhibited as a four-channel audiovisual installation at Instituto Tomie Otake / as part of Sonar in Sao Paulo in 2004 and in New York aMonkeytown in 2006.

Some pieces were also part of the original soundtrack we composed for the Brazilian feature film '33' directed by Kiko Goifmann who at the age 33 decides to undertake a journey to find his biological mother. And a few others pieces were  written for the installation-dance piece Winterspaceby British duo Igloo.

Both releases reflect an intensive period of prolific music-making and transformation in Tetine's trajectory as a Brazilian duo relocated to London from Sao Paulo in the early 2000’s. It also coincides with the period we were fighting cliched Latino stereotypes  in Europe through the airwaves of Resonance Fm on a weekly radio show Slum Dunk dedicated to all sorts of unexpected and obscure music produced in the south hemisphere.

The 20 tracks on MOTHER NATURE & BLACK SEMIOTICS form a collection of never-released material. They translate an intense period of social and personal changes involving the end of a long relationship, obsessive gay cruising, hormone alterations, family deaths and a disturbing lack of money.

Tetine’s music here is dark, atmospheric, slow, delicate, melodic and playful. Some of the tracks sound achingly sad. Some tracks evoke nostalgic and spacious liquid landscapes. Its otherworldly beauty and meditative qualities reflect a particular harmonic sense acquired after more then 18 years recording and improvising together as a duo. Both albums display a careful craftsman's approach to sound. The music is the result of a luminous-dark mix of organic and synthetic sounds with synths, piano, bells, melodic basslines and samplers running through melancholic counterpoints of great beauty.

MOTHER NATURE BLACK SEMIOTICS speak of “staying human” as opposed to “becoming machine”. It was composed with the arrogance of a "second childhood" as Derek Jarman once put it. We haven’t blocked any of the sonic flow during  its recording sessions in favor of more planned or formalistic approach. Its creative process and the spirit of the sessions were urgent and self-liberating. Everything was done spontaneously with zero pressure - no record labels involved - and  zero cash.
It's also worth saying that these tracks were inspired by Goya paintings, Derek Jarman films, Greimas’ Semiotics of Passion theory, Brazilian 70’s religious processions, early Milton Mascimento's folk songs, Kraut and a great deal of Kraftwerk. On another note, we are proud to say that no steroids or heavy compressors were used in the making of these tracks. Its harmonics run freely & do resonate. They are there.

MOTHER NATURE BLACK SEMIOTICS are dedicated to our dear late friends Charlote Maluf, Laura Di Vison & Claudia Wonder - exceptional Brazilian artists that made a huge impact on Tetine.

ON BLACK SEMIOTICS & MUSIC

The term “black semiotics” is used here as an unofficial DIY poetic-political diagram of musical signs, sounds, indices and feelings which can be located and/or perceived, simultaneously, in the inner spaces of songs and on the outside in the air.  This gesture shall be understood as a possibility of engaging in new modes of subjectivation and processes of sublimation - as a generative sonic metaphor for speculating on physical, ethereal and sensorial forms in conjunction with a number of pre-industrialized, serialized and capitalized dimensions of) any musical material; obscure, overlooked or popular and also as direct political expressions of resistance in relation to distinct hegemonic sonic scenes and contexts both internally and externally in the world territory. In this regard, an electronic clap in the syntax of a programmed rhythm pattern in a song, a small sound fragment of a sampled syllable such as “ai”  taken from the  phrase “ai amor” - doubled or duplicated as a sonic unstable interval produced by hitting two different notes on a cheap sampling keyboard - or an entire song as a wave form in a given context or an ‘artist’ in flesh (well-placed or displaced in any territory) or in name (also a group, a collective or an entity) in relation to other artists, groups, collectives and sonic expressions and experiences may be ‘felt’, read and translated inter-semiotically as new components of a sexually-charged reflexive automatic musico-writing improvisation to invent or generate new ramifications, free and rigid associations, and other subjective relations between forms and substances, expressions and contents in a live sonic diagram. Black semiotics, thus, are thought in the context of this essay in terms of perceptible sonic-social relations which are able to act randomly disorganised and inappropriately in the articulation of a black-latino-brown musical reading of the world as supressed voices in other musical contexts. Brazilian post punk, funk carioca and other bossas are part of what we call Black Semiotics.

Interview for Brazilian paper O GLOBO (complete)

Qual a ligação?

''In Loveland With You' é um disco melancólico, mais experimental mesmo.

To Burn Or Not Burn' do Arnaldo. Dai criamos o To Burn.

A distância.
